There are a variety of ways by which CBD can be used. It can be swallowed as a capsule, vaped or taken as an extract. However, many people prefer applying CBD topically when it comes to providing relief to their chronic pains, inflammation, arthritis, etc. Today, we will take a look at why some users prefer CBD lotions or massage oils to other forms of CBD products especially when it comes to the treatment of specific forms of ailments like joint pain, arthritis and skin conditions like eczema.

First of all, we’d like to state that no matter what form or way CBD is used, it’s going to go to work to produce the same effect. So why then do some users prefer topical application? Well, for starters, it allows users the opportunity to tackle the source of the problem directly by applying the CBD topical straight to where the pain, inflammation or irritation is. Topical CBD is also thought to work a whole lot speedily as it doesn’t as it doesn’t have to take the all-cumbersome trip of traveling through the digestive system.

Whilst there have been a lot of studies about CBD and how it benefits humans, most researches about the topical application of CBD have been conducted on animals. Let’s take a close look at one such study conducted by a team of researchers at the University of Kentucky in July 2016. In the study, the knee joints of all the rats were artificially induced with arthritis. The focus if the study was to find out the effectiveness of CBD in relieving the symptoms of arthritis by reducing pain and increasing mobility.

The results of the study showed a reduction in the swelling of joints and a reduction in pain which was evident by how the rats positioned the joints affected. The research also showed how very few and seemingly insignificant side effects were experienced by the rats after CBD usage and how the topical application of CBD didn’t in any way alter the behaviour of the rats. So how does CBD help with pain when applied topically?

When CBD or for that matter any cannabinoid is applied topically, its contents are absorbed straight into the affected area without having to take a trip through the digestive system, and this allows for quicker relief. Sc

A neurologist from Brooklyn, Dr. Ranga Krishna explains why he roots for topical CBD even in the face of a lack of solid scientific proof to back its effectiveness on man. He says, “Topicals are a fantastic option as they’re easily measured in terms of ingredient compositions, and are higher in bio-availability than orally ingested compounds; this being because they are able to skip liver metabolism,” he said.

Although there is a lot of anecdotal evidence out there about how beneficial CBD topicals are, there is still a long way to go before it is confirmed by large-scale research. This, however, shouldn’t prevent you from using it.

When going in for a CBD product however, it is important that you carry out your due diligence well and make sure that you are buying a high-quality product from a reliable source.
